| Headaches Are Not Normal by Dr. Brett L. Lukert, DC Most of us endure an occasional headache, but approximately 45 million Americans (one in six) suffer from chronic headaches. Frequently in our office, when we are treating a patient for headaches, the patient will presume they are a normal part of life. In some instances this may be true, but in a vast majority of cases, headaches are very treatable and often preventable. Initially, it is important to identify the particular type of headache. Since there are many different kinds, a thorough exam is performed to determine whether the headache is due to tension, allergies, sinuses, migraines, or cervical dysfunction. Some headaches involve multiple causes. Once the specific type is diagnosed, it is then determined how the patient will best be treated. Usually, headaches due to allergies and sinuses are best treated with medication, injections or treatment prescribed by your medical doctor. Headaches due to cervical (neck) dysfunction and muscle tension will generally respond very well to chiropractic care, as well as massage therapy. Treatment for migraine headaches will vary, depending on the type and severity. Since migraines can be complicated and often have multiple causes, co-treatment consisting of medication from your medical doctor along with chiropractic adjustments will often be the most effective. The primary goal with these types of headaches is to prevent them from occurring and to minimize the severity if, and when, they do occur. From a wellness perspective, the easiest way to decrease the frequency of headaches is to eliminate or minimize some of the most common causes, which include sleep deprivation, increased stress levels, excessive caffeine, dehydration, smoking, skipping meals, and poor posture. This can be accomplished by making health a priority and getting ad¬equate rest, exercise and nutritional balance. Remember, headaches are not normal. Life is short…enjoy
